The Story Behind the Focus Points Method
The Focus Points™ Method came directly out of my own challenges with ADHD. For years, I felt stuck in a cycle: simple daily tasks went unfinished, hobbies came and went, and purchases often filled the void left by a lack of focus and discipline. My brain constantly chased novelty — a new project, a new tool, a new interest — but nothing lasted long enough to create lasting change.
Bookbinding became a turning point. At first, it was just a hobby, then it became an experiment. I started making my own journals, designing and redesigning pages to see if a different structure could help me build habits. Around the same time, I began diving deeper into ADHD research. Over and over, one insight stood out: dopamine is the engine of motivation. When dopamine is present, focus and energy follow. When it fades, tasks suddenly feel impossible. That gap — the space where dopamine disappears — is where the Focus Points™ Method began.
Why It Works
Focus Points™ is not another journal you abandon after a week. It is intentionally designed to work with an ADHD brain rather than against it. Every feature is deliberate, from the number of reward slots each month to the size and order of the checkboxes on a page. Over a year of testing and refining, I tuned each detail so the journal triggers small but consistent dopamine rewards that build into real progress.
The key is that progress feels tangible. Instead of vague encouragement, every task earns points. Instead of an endless to-do list, you have a structure where completion equals reward. The method balances flexibility — you choose how to earn your points — with accountability, so your brain experiences the satisfaction of achievement without the stress of perfection.

The Rewards System
The heart of Focus Points™ is its monthly rewards system. At the beginning of each month, you set five rewards for yourself. Not three, not four — exactly five. This structure is intentional. Each week, you set a points goal. If you reach it, you redeem one reward. By the end of the month, you will have earned four rewards, but one will remain unclaimed.
This is not a mistake — it is a crucial design feature. The leftover reward trains your brain in delayed gratification. It shows you that even with effort, there are limits, and that not every impulse leads to an immediate payoff. If you miss your goal one week, the impact is even stronger: it fuels motivation to hit the target the next week. Over time, this cycle reshapes the way you approach impulsivity, spending, and patience.
The Focus Points™ System

Every task in the Focus Points™ Journal has a point value. These values are carefully weighted to reflect how much effort and mental energy the task requires. Filling out your daily prompts, for example, may earn fewer points than completing a full page of journaling. The balance ensures that progress feels both achievable and rewarding.
Weekly points totals are broken into three modes: beginner, intermediate, and expert. For example, an intermediate week is 700 points — achievable by filling out every daily page and completing three journaling pages across the week. You can spread those pages out, complete them all in one day, or skip a day and catch up later. The flexibility makes the system sustainable, while the points make your progress visible.
At the end of each week, an optional habit tracker lets you add your own custom goals. You assign point values to these habits — or none at all — depending on what matters most to you. This personalization allows the method to adapt with you over time, rather than locking you into a rigid structure.
Designed for the ADHD Brain
Every question and prompt in the Focus Points™ Journal is written with intention. For example, instead of asking you to write “today’s priorities,” the prompt reads: “The three priorities for tomorrow are…” This subtle change gives your brain 24 hours of perceived time to procrastinate. Instead of feeling pressure to act immediately, you get space to relax while still committing to your future self. The next day, you follow through on the priorities you already set. It’s a small psychological shift, but one that relieves stress while building consistency.
These kinds of design choices are woven throughout the journal. The prompts lower barriers, the checkboxes provide visible progress, and the rewards tie the entire system to dopamine reinforcement. The structure doesn’t punish you when you miss a day — it motivates you to keep moving forward.
More Than a Notebook
Focus Points™ is not just about writing things down. It’s about building a system of self-discipline that feels rewarding in real time. The sense of accomplishment you feel when you check a box, earn points, and redeem a reward is genuine — not forced. The process turns tasks into achievements, and achievements into momentum.
This method also works even better when shared. Set monthly rewards with a partner, friend, or family member, and accountability becomes part of the system. Others will encourage you, cheer for you, and celebrate your wins alongside you. In that way, Focus Points™ becomes not just a journal, but a framework for real, lasting change.
